Best Phones Under ₹20,000 (2026): What the Spec Sheet Won't Tell You

₹20,000 used to buy a phone with a sharp AMOLED screen and 8GB of RAM. In 2026, after a global memory-chip crunch, it mostly buys 4GB of RAM and a 720p screen. India’s shipments of phones under ₹20,000 fell 47% year on year in July–September, Counterpoint reported, the steepest drop of any price band. Here’s what the money still buys, and the spec-sheet lines that hide the compromises.
How we picked: we haven’t tested these phones ourselves. Picks are based on official spec sheets, late-October 2026 prices on Amazon and Flipkart (they change daily in the sales) and published reviews. All are 2026 launches.
Why ₹20,000 buys less this year
- Prices rose: Counterpoint put the average Indian phone price rise at 16% in the first half of 2026, and about 32% for phones under ₹10,000.
- Buyers walked away: shipments of phones under ₹10,000 fell 65% year on year in that half, and the whole market hit its lowest third quarter in a decade.
- More rises are coming: Counterpoint expects another round after the festive sales, and no easing of memory prices before 2028.
Our phone prices guide explains the memory crunch behind it.
Our picks
Best for most people: Samsung Galaxy M17e 5G
About ₹16,500 for 4GB/128GB on Amazon (launched at ₹13,999 in March).
- Six years of Android and security updates, as reported at launch, the longest here.
- 6,000mAh battery, 25W charging, and a microSD slot up to 2TB.
- 6.7-inch 120Hz screen, but HD+ (720p).
- 50MP main camera plus a 2MP depth helper, and IP54 splash resistance.
The catch: a 720p screen and 4GB of RAM at this price. The 6GB version costs about ₹19,500.
Best battery and charging: iQOO Z11 Lite 5G
About ₹19,500 for 4GB/128GB on Amazon (launched July).
- 6,500mAh battery with 44W charging, a big step up from the 15W on several rivals.
- IP65 on iQOO’s own page (one review says IP64), and a 50MP Sony main camera.
- 91mobiles called it a “dependable everyday phone with good battery life.”
The catch: 4GB of RAM, an HD+ screen, and no update promise we could find.
Best screen and camera: Samsung Galaxy F70 5G
₹19,999 for 4GB/128GB, on Flipkart only (launched 18 October).
- The only Full HD+ AMOLED screen here, at 90Hz.
- 50MP main camera with OIS (optical stabilisation, for steadier low-light shots) and a 5MP ultra-wide.
- Four Android upgrades and five years of security fixes, as reported.
The catch: no charger in the box (25W sold separately), a 2023-era Exynos 1330 chip, 4GB of RAM, and no full reviews yet. The “₹17,999” you’ll see needs a bank offer.
Cheapest worth buying: Redmi A7 Pro 5G
About ₹14,000–14,500 for 4GB/128GB on Amazon (launched at ₹13,499 in April).
- 6,300mAh battery and a big 6.9-inch 120Hz screen (HD+).
- UFS 2.2 storage, faster than the eMMC some rivals use.
- Four Android upgrades and six years of security fixes, as reported.
The catch: slow 15W charging, a basic Unisoc chip and only IP52. Don’t confuse it with the 4G “Redmi A7 Pro”, a different phone with the same name.
Also worth a look: OPPO K14x 5G
About ₹16,950 for 4GB/64GB on Amazon, up from ₹12,999 at launch. A 6,500mAh battery with 45W charging, IP64 and UFS 2.2 storage. But it launched on Android 15 in February with no update promise we could find, has a mono speaker, and costs 26–30% more than at launch.
Think twice
- realme Narzo 100 Lite 5G: a 7,000mAh battery, but eMMC 5.1 storage (slower) and 15W charging, so a full charge takes hours.
- Lava Virat V1 Pro 5G (about ₹15,600): the only phone here with 6GB RAM as standard, and reviewers liked its IP64 rating and battery. But it’s reported to get just one Android upgrade and two years of security fixes.
Just over ₹20,000
- Redmi 17C 5G (₹20,999 for 4GB/128GB): UFS 2.2, IP64, and a 33W charger in the box.
- Poco M8 5G (about ₹23,200 now): a Full HD+ OLED screen, a faster Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, IP66 and six years of updates. It launched at ₹18,999. If you can stretch, it’s the best phone near this price.
The spec-sheet traps at this price
- “Virtual RAM” or “up to 14GB dynamic RAM.” It’s 4–6GB of real RAM plus borrowed storage, which is much slower.
- eMMC vs UFS storage. eMMC opens and installs apps more slowly. The spec sheet often buries it.
- HD+ at 120–144Hz. Six of the seven phones under ₹20,000 here have 720p-class screens. A high refresh rate doesn’t make text sharper.
- “50MP AI camera” plus 2MP extras. A 2MP depth or macro lens is filler. Only the F70 has a real ultra-wide.
- Charger in the box. The F70 doesn’t include one. Check before you compare prices.
- “Effective price.” Lava’s ₹13,999 and the F70’s ₹17,999 need a specific bank card. The real prices are ₹15,999 and ₹19,999.
- Update promises range from one year to six. Over the life of the phone, that matters more than an extra 30Hz.

Honest verdict
Under ₹20,000 in 2026, every phone makes a big compromise, usually the screen and the RAM. Pay for the things that last: updates, battery and storage speed. The Galaxy M17e is the safest buy for most people, the iQOO Z11 Lite if you want fast charging, and the Galaxy F70 if the screen and camera matter most and you already have a charger. And don’t wait for prices to fall: they’re expected to rise again after Diwali.
Questions people ask
Which is the best phone under ₹20,000 right now?
For most people, the Samsung Galaxy M17e 5G, at about ₹16,500 for 4GB/128GB on Amazon in late October: six years of updates, a 6,000mAh battery and Samsung's service network. For faster charging and better water resistance, the iQOO Z11 Lite (about ₹19,500, 44W). For the best screen and camera, the Galaxy F70 (₹19,999, Flipkart only), the only phone here with a Full HD AMOLED screen.
Why do budget phones cost more in 2026?
Memory chips. Counterpoint found Indian phone prices rose 16% on average in the first half of 2026, and phones under ₹10,000 about 32%, as AI data centres soaked up memory supply and a weaker rupee added to costs. Several phones here sell for 18–30% more than their launch prices.
Is 4GB RAM enough in 2026?
For calls, WhatsApp, UPI and video, yes. For heavy multitasking or games, it's tight, and 'virtual RAM' doesn't fix that, because it borrows much slower storage. If you can, buy the 6GB variant.
Will phone prices fall after Diwali?
Unlikely. Counterpoint expects another round of price rises after the festive sales and doesn't expect memory prices to ease before 2028. If you need a phone now, the sale is a reasonable time to buy.
Which phones under ₹20,000 get the longest software updates?
As reported at launch: the Galaxy M17e, six years of Android and security updates; the Redmi A7 Pro 5G, four Android upgrades and six years of security fixes; the Galaxy F70, four upgrades and five years of security. The Lava Virat V1 Pro gets one upgrade and two years of security. We found no promise for the OPPO K14x, iQOO Z11 Lite or realme Narzo 100 Lite.
