Can You Put Steel in a Microwave? Microwave-Safe Containers, Decoded

Basgo saysNo metal on microwave. Metal OK on convection.

Every Indian kitchen has a steel tiffin, a stack of takeaway boxes and a microwave that came with a metal rack it says you mustn’t use. So which is it? The answer depends on which mode the oven is in, and makers’ own manuals spell it out.

Why metal and microwaves don’t mix

A microwave heats food by sending microwaves into it. Metal reflects them. So food in a steel box barely heats, and the reflected energy can damage the oven. Worse, thin edges and points, like foil, a fork or a gold-rimmed plate, concentrate the energy and spark (arcing).

But a convection microwave also has a heater and a fan, like a small oven. In grill and convection modes, no microwaves are used, so metal is fine.

Mode by mode

Material Microwave mode Grill / convection Combination
Steel, aluminium, metal tins No Yes Check the manual
Aluminium foil Avoid Generally yes Check the manual
Ovenproof glass (borosilicate), glass-ceramic Yes Yes Yes
Microwave-safe plastic Yes No: it can melt No
China, pottery Only if oven-safe Only if oven-safe Only if oven-safe
Anything with metallic paint or rims No Check the manual No
Melamine No No No

Sources: LG India’s support guide, IFB’s user manual and Samsung India’s guidance on cookware. Combination mode is where they disagree: IFB’s chart says no metal, while Samsung says its supplied racks can be used in grill, convection and combination cooking. Your own model’s manual settles it.

The common cases

  • Steel tiffins and plates: not in microwave mode. Transfer the food to glass or a microwave-safe bowl.
  • The metal rack that came with the oven: for grill and convection (and combination, if your manual allows). It must sit properly on its supports, or it can spark.
  • Takeaway boxes and ice-cream tubs: not made to be heated. Transfer the food.
  • Borosilicate glass bowls: the safe default in every mode.
  • Cling film and paper: Samsung says to keep them from touching the food.
  • Melamine plates: Samsung says avoid; IFB says never.

“Microwave-safe”, decoded

The label means a container can take microwave mode. It doesn’t mean it can take grill or convection heat: Samsung’s cookbook warns plastic can melt in convection mode. The US FDA advises using cookware made for microwave ovens, and notes some plastic containers shouldn’t be used in one at all. In India, BIS published draft standards in 2026 for plastic containers meant for microwave use; they aren’t in force yet.

If you see sparks

Stop the oven at once. Look for foil, a metal rim, a twist-tie, or a rack that isn’t seated properly. Remove it before you start again.

Honest verdict

No metal in microwave mode; metal is fine in grill and convection. For everyday reheating, use ovenproof glass; keep plastic to containers marked microwave-safe, and never on grill or convection. For combination mode, follow your own manual. Choosing a microwave? See the best convection microwaves under ₹15,000.

Questions people ask

Can I put a steel plate or tiffin in the microwave?

Not in microwave mode. Microwaves can't pass through metal, so the food won't heat properly, and metal can spark and damage the oven. In grill and convection modes, which heat like an ordinary oven, LG India and IFB both say metal and steel utensils are fine.

Can I use aluminium foil in a microwave?

Samsung India groups foil with metal and advises avoiding it in microwave cooking. LG explains why foil sparks: when it touches the oven walls or isn't moulded to the food, its edges act like antennas. In grill or convection mode, foil-lined trays are generally fine; check your manual.

Is it safe to microwave food in plastic containers?

Only in containers labelled microwave-safe, and only in microwave mode. Samsung's cookbook warns that plastic can melt in convection mode, and the US FDA says some plastic containers shouldn't be used in a microwave at all. Takeaway boxes and old ice-cream tubs are not microwave-safe. Keep cling film from touching the food.

Can glass and ceramic go in a microwave?

Ovenproof glass and glass-ceramic are the safest choice in every mode, Samsung says. Use china and pottery only if they're marked oven-safe, and avoid anything with metallic paint or a gold or silver rim, which can spark. IFB says ordinary glass that isn't heat-resistant shouldn't be used in any mode.

Can I use a metal cake tin in a convection microwave?

Yes, in convection mode: LG India and IFB both list metal and aluminium as fine there. Combination mode (microwave plus convection) is where makers differ: IFB's manual says no metal, while Samsung says its own racks can be used. Follow your own model's manual.
